AGE UK Calderdale & Kirklees
I've been a trustee of Age UK since 1993, when it was Age Concern Calderdale, and have seen it grow from a small concern renting rooms at Wards End and the YMCA to become a major charity locally. We undertake lots of contracts on behalf of such agencies as Calderdale, Kirklees and the Health Authority in order to do what we can to enhance the lives of the older people in our area. We also undertake work on our own behalf, particularly our information services, and on behalf of Age UK nationally.
We have a team of wonderful and caring staff and scores of volunteers. We get a lot of support locally which is very important to us.
I am a volunteer and it's a good way to get to know some amazing people and to do something for others. I am continually shocked at the callous way some older people (and other disadvantaged groups) are treated. I know bad experiences are not the norm but unless society is continually vigilant people can easily become marginalised. For older people this can mean hardship and loneliness as well as physical deprivation.
For further details of the great work done by this charity look on it's website at http://www.ageuk.org.uk/calderdaleandkirklees/. You can donate through this site and also find details of how to be a volunteer.
Charity work doesn't have to be a chore. Dave, my husband is an enthusiast for The Great Escape film and recently assisted with the setting up of an exhibition in Füssen, Bavaria called Hollywood in Füssen. This was to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the release of the film, in the place where it was filmed. Now that the exhibition is over,The Bike is on its way home to Scotland, from whence it has been very kindly loaned by its owner. So we have taken the opportunity to use it to raise some money for Age UK Calderdale and Kirklees.
